KERALA -- A little strip of land, on the southwest coast of India, variously described as Paradise-on-Earth, God's Own Country, Spice Coast... Kerala, a name that brings childhood memories flooding back -- of the verdant greenery of my ancestral village, the earthly smell of the paddy fields, the dazzling lights and sounds of the colorful temple festivals, the matchless grandeur of caparisoned temple elephants, the rich sweetness of ripe country-mangoes, sharkara and karikku, the melody of sopaana-sangeetham and the precise rhythm of chendamelam and panchavaadyam...
